Crayola's Commitment to Sustainability: A Journey of Innovation and Environmental Care

Are you passionate about art, creativity, and sustainability?

In a world where environmental consciousness is more critical than ever, Crayola stands out as a brand that not only sparks creativity but also prioritizes sustainability. Since the creation of the first Crayola crayons in 1903, powered by hydropower from the Bushkill Creek in Pennsylvania, the company has been on a mission to inspire children, teachers, and families while caring for the planet.

The ColorCycle program, launched in 2013, was a bold step towards sustainability. However, despite its positive intent, the program faced challenges that hindered its effectiveness. Shipping used markers long distances increased carbon footprint, counteracting the initial goal of reducing CO2e emissions. Moreover, the inclusion of non-plastic items in marker shipments led to contamination and recycling difficulties for third-party recyclers, ultimately prompting Crayola to discontinue the program.

Despite these setbacks, Crayola remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainability. The journey towards finding impactful solutions for end-of-product-life initiatives continues, recognizing the complexities involved in recycling mixed plastics and small marker components. Nevertheless, the company has made significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint through investments in renewable energy and manufacturing efficiencies.

On the educational front, Crayola educators have developed free, standards-aligned resources to teach sustainability through engaging, hands-on experiences. These resources include Project-Based Learning lessons, Thinking Sheets to visualize student thinking, and animated videos that inspire children to set and achieve their sustainability goals.

As we navigate the challenges of environmental stewardship, Crayola's dedication to innovation and environmental care shines through. The brand's unwavering commitment to sustainability serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring future generations to create, learn, and protect our planet.
